About
Thanks for your interest in MTSHW. One of the benefits of working with a small organization is you interact closely with real people. I think it's important to share part of my story, background, and vision.
I have spent 30+ years in education, a majority on college campuses, and currently serve on the Biology faculty at Brevard College in Brevard, North Carolina. My experience as a teaching and research biologist has allowed ample chances to work and conduct studies outside in the natural world. Several years ago, I became interested in the therapeutic value of spending time in natural areas and recreating outdoors. This led to several research projects, the development of new academic courses, and interactions with a variety of like-minded people, all of which have continued to fuel my curiosity.
These endeavors also provided openings to approach the topics of health and wellness, specifically mental health, in new ways. The years leading up to the Covid pandemic were characterized by rising concerns about the mental health of college students, with which I have firsthand experience, but also in a variety of other populations. The pandemic only compounded already-existing problems, and stress, anxiety, and burnout continue to be increasingly significant issues for many.
Seeking to increase my skill set and competence to better address some of these issues, I have taken a variety of continuing education courses and earned certificates in Positive Psychology and Resilience Studies, Mental Health First Aid, and Mindfulness-based Ecotherapy Facilitation. Most recently, in the fall of 2024, I earned National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching certification (NBC-HWC) and also became a member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. These trainings and professional affiliations have accelerated my realization of the needs and opportunities which can’t necessarily be met solely through primary care. They have also convinced me of the power, utility, and potential of motivational interviewing and self-determination theory for creating behavior change. When applied to aspects of health and wellness, these can change lives.
I hope we can have a conversation about whatever it is that drew you to this site. Please contact me if you'd like more information.
